Two cities, two clocks: why Amsterdam and Brussels both need their pricing sorted before September

Amsterdam runs on a countdown, Brussels on a calendar — and both get busy in September. IBC fills the RAI while the EU returns from recess. Here’s what to do this month to set your rates before demand locks in, so you walk into September ready instead of catching up.

Amsterdam runs on a countdown. Brussels runs on a calendar. Both are about to get busy at almost exactly the same time, and neither will wait for you to notice.

IBC lands at the RAI from 11 to 14 September 2026: four days, roughly 45,000 visitors, over 1,300 exhibitors from more than 170 countries. It’s the kind of demand spike where the whole city fills up at once, and the hotels that are priced for it in advance and track demand in real-time get the best of it.

Brussels doesn’t get a countdown. It gets a rhythm. The EU goes quiet every August, officials on recess, meetings paused, the steady churn of business travel that usually fills the city’s hotels just isn’t there. Then September hits, la rentrée, and the institutions come back at full strength. It happens every single year, and every single year it seems to catch hotels slightly off guard.

Different shape, same lesson: whatever’s driving your city’s next demand spike, right now is the moment you actually have time to think about it.

Right now is your head start

Not a break to just sit back on, though Brussels has earned some of that too. It’s the stretch where the pricing decisions that get hard once things speed up are still easy to make well: where your rate should start, how fast it should climb as rooms fill, and whether a one-night guest should be allowed to take your best Saturday of the month.

Four things worth doing this month:

1. Track your pickup, not last year’s rate.

Compare rooms already on the books for IBC or your September EU calendar to where you’d expect to be at six to eight weeks out. Ahead of that means keep pushing your rate. Behind it means you have time to adjust before demand locks in, which you have right now and won’t in September.

2. Use your comp set to confirm, but with a grain of salt-

If your pickup is strong and your closest competitors are raising rates too, that confirms real demand, and you can push further with confidence. If they’re not moving and your pickup still looks strong, trust your own booking pace over theirs.

3. Let bookings set the price, not the calendar.

Pick a starting rate for IBC week or the September EU return. Raise it a step at 50% booked, again at 75%. If you’re in the final two weeks and still filling fast, go to your top rate.

4. Put check-ins on your calendar.

Make sure to check the pace against the plan for each event and adjust if necessary. Regular check-ins will help you walk into September prepared, rather than catching up.

If you’re also using a minimum length-of-stay requirement for IBC’s four peak nights, this is a good week to decide on it. A stay restriction protects a fair-rate Saturday from going to a one-night guest while the rest of the week sits half-booked.

Pricing that keeps working while you focus on everything else

If tracking comp sets, adjusting rates by hand, and staying on top of the numbers every day aren’t realistic for your team, that’s exactly the job RoomPriceGenie does for you. It keeps watching demand, competitor pricing, and your booking pace, and adjusts your rates accordingly, whether the spike is a single four-day trade show or a recurring institutional calendar.

Independent properties running on it saw average room revenue rise 19% year over year, in a study spanning 567 hotels across nine countries. Over 4,000 hotels in 65 countries run on it today, including business hotels in Amsterdam and Brussels that face exactly these patterns.

Manual or automated, the opportunity is the same. Whether your city’s giving you a quiet stretch like Brussels or just a countdown like Amsterdam’s IBC, right now is the best chance you’ll get all year to be ready before September lands, calmly, on your terms.
