SMERF – Group Sub Segment

Definition

SMERF is an acronym representing a group of market segments in the hospitality industry: Social, Military, Educational, Religious, and Fraternal. These groups often require room blocks and event spaces for gatherings such as weddings, reunions, conferences, retreats, and organizational meetings. Typically, these events are self-funded, with attendees covering their own expenses.

How to use it

Revenue managers use SMERF segmentation to tailor group offers and pricing based on budget-conscious organizations, helping to fill occupancy gaps during off-peak periods.
